More than 30 years old and as strong as ever, the Australian Kookaburra is an iconic coin series featuring annual designs of one of Australia’s most recognisable birds. Famed for its raucous laughing call, the kookaburra is heard across Australia – from the outback to the back yard. The coin’s design depicts a coloured representation of a kookaburra perched on a branch of an Australian native gum tree. Incorporating The Perth Mint’s’P’ mintmark, the reverse also portrays the tree’s leaves and seedpods. Each coin in the mintage is accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity. There was one instance in my time as a collector where I sent coins in to be graded. I sent in two different lots of coins; these Brandenburg Gate Kookaburras and the Reverse Dragon Dollar Restrikes that are also listed in my store. Let’s just say there were significant pros and cons with the Kookaburras. The biggest negative was that these coins did not grade particularly well, and I made a rookie mistake by not having NGC cutoff grading at MS69. I wound up with one MS68 as a result (see my store). The huge positive, however, is that very few of these coins were graded and I have 12 of the 19 MS69s graded by NGC and 5 of the 6 MS70s! This listing, therefore is for one of the six MS70 1 oz Silver Brandenburg Gate Kookaburra coins graded by NGC. They are all Early Releases and I have listed all five that I own. Despite being slabbed, these coins may have very small milk spots. Finally, please note that this is a Royal Australian Mint coin, not a Perth Mint item. The serial number has been blacked out in the photo, but not on the actual slab. I get a lot of questions about this; I’ve seen this done to shield the serial number from potential counterfeiters. I don’t know if there’s any validity to this, but I’ve chosen to do it.
