Palau 2012 $5 World of Wonders VI Trevi Fountain Rome 20g Silver Proof Coin
20.00g (0.80oz). The world famous Trevi-Fountain in baroque style was built in Italys capital city during an almost twenty year construction period. 20 m wide and 26 m high, it is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome. The aqueduct has been in continuous use since classical antiquity and up until the year 2007 it supplied the Trevi-Fountain with water. In 1732 Nicola Salvi, who was an unknown architect of that time, started with the construction work. Salvi was selected as the winner of an architecture competition by Pope Clement XII. However, the architect died before his masterpiece was completed. One reason was that Nicola Salvi worked extremely accurately and had the detailed sculptures redone again and again until he was totally satisfied. Anyone who visits Rome today is already attracted from afar to the fountain, due to its rushing sound. The magnificent sculptures portray the sea god Neptune who is flanked by proud horses and mythical creatures. With this, Nicola represented the forces of nature which threaten works of mankind. The fountain is framed by a triumphal arch which is structured into the Palazzo Contis facade. Legend says that those who throw a coin into the fountain will visit Rome a second time. If two coins are thrown into the fountain one will fall in love with a Roman and those who even throw a third coin in will even marry this acquaintance. Thus, hundreds of thousands of Euro accumulate annually, which are fished out of the fountain daily and donated to charity. Partly embellished with color. Low mintage – limited to only 2,500 pieces. Comes with capsule and the certificate of authenticity (was released without box). We strive for excellent service. Palau 2009 Antique 7 Wonders of the World Statue of Zeus 25g Silver Proof Coin. 25.00g (0.80oz). The oldest list of the Wonders of the World originated approx. 450 BC by Herodotus. The current commonly used list was compiled by a Greek poet named Antipater from Sidon. The Greek referred to the Wonders of the World as; The seven places to be seen on the inhabited earth. As 7 had a special symbolic meaning in the European Ancient World exactly 7 Wonders of the World were specified. The number 7 was believed to be complete and sacred. Antipaters list includes the following Wonders of the World: Great Pyramid of Giza, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, the Statue of Zeus, the Temple of Artemis, the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus, the Colossus of Rhodes and the Lighthouse of Alexandria. Today only the Great Pyramid of Giza is preserved. The other six constructions were either destroyed by earthquakes, fires or vandalism. Unfortunately only a few illustrations exist. Today one does not even know exactly where these Wonders of the World were situated or what they exactly looked like. In this coin set the Wonders of the Ancient World are uniquely shown. Original Antique 7 Wonders release! Partly embellished with color. Low mintage – limited to only 2,500 pieces. Comes with capsule and the certificate of authenticity (was released without box). 15.57 (1/2 oz). Amazing coin issued by the Republic of Palau in 2010 belonging to new series: World of Insect. It depicts the terrible grasshopper species and particularly it honors the desert locust: one of the Egyptian biblic plagues. The coin reverse depicts a beautiful coloured locust, on left side the total representation of an insect while it’s on the grass, the legend “SCHISTOCERCA GREGARIA” and the year of issue. The coin obverse depicts the Palau State Coat of Arms. SCHISTOCERCA GREGARIA Since the beginning of time, Desert Locusts have been a subject to hatred and fear. Their habits are simple they reproduce at lightning speeds, and when the population has reached its peak, they move to a new area, leaving destroyed crop fields behind them. The largest population of these animals currently resides in the Sahel region in North Africa, although they are also widespread all over the Arabian countries, Iran, Israel, Turkey and South of Spain. Despite the efforts to control their numbers to reduce the massive damage done to crop fields, their population still remains high, and millions of tons of crop are destroyed every year. The desert locust is one of about a dozen species of grasshoppers known as locusts which, unlike other grasshoppers, are able to change their behaviour in response to population density. This enables them to form swarms that can migrate over large distances. Locust swarms vary from less than one square kilometre to several hundred square kilometres. There can be from 40 million to as many as 80 million locust adults in each square kilometre of a swarm.
